1. Go with a theme. Each postcard design can be unique, but decide upon a unifying theme to increase the postcard power to communicate your message. A consistent theme will make the cards in your series recognizable and memorable. The theme of the Design to Spec postcards is “There’s No Small Fish!”– small business often means going solo in a large, competitive market, but small has the opportunity to stand out and be unique in the face of the larger competition.

2. Give them enough information. The basics can pay dividends or sabotage your project. Make sure you how you want customers to contact you– telephone, address, website. Tell them what you do. See the back of our postcard (above).

3. Communicate clear action. What do you want the person to do when they receive the card? Whether it’s on the front or back, include the action you want them to take– Call you, visit your website, come in your store, buy your product, remember an appointment, sign up for a program. You’re sending out postcards for a reason… say what it is.

4. Express your identity. Your business may already have an identity or your postcards are part of the process of establishing its identity. You know your target market… who do you want to appeal to? Postcards are your opportunity to project that your business is traditional, part of the youth culture, spiritual, family oriented, etc.

5. Frequency. When sending a series of cards, you don’t want the memory of the last card to fade. Depending upon your marketing plan, postcards can be sent monthly and one per quarter, anything less than that risks diluting their impact.
